scavenger hunt

Whimsy...

These gum tree blossoms, photographed while I was out walking, remind me of the whimsical characters from "Snugglepot & Cuddlepie" by May Gibbs.
A story that I loved to read when I was a child.

 Create...
I'm always amazed at how beautiful spider webs are.
It's incredible that each day the spider creates an intricate web only to have it destroyed by people, wind and other things.
This one is in our driveway so will be ruined by my car.
But the resilient spider will just spin another one tomorrow.

Dust...
I was wondering how I might make dust look beautiful.
Here's a very dusty spot. A window sill & the top of a sub woofer.
Tucked away in a corner that has obviously not been cleaned for a while.

Swing...

Shoot...
It's not spring in my part of the world, but I found a few new shoots on the roses in our garden.
A last flourish of growth before winter.

A walk with Poppy

First we walked past this canal on the way to the river...

along the path beside some soft, feathery grass...

then we stopped and watched the wash from the wake of the rivercat...

and finally we sat for a moment and enjoyed the peaceful river.

snap it {old}

To me, rust & old go together.
So I found some rusty things to photograph for this week's "snap it" over at faith hope & a whole lotta love.

Balance

I was reading this post by Kat Sloma about balancing shapes.
She explores the idea of how shapes can be balanced in a photograph to add interest.
( you really should read the post if you want a better explanation).
So, I had a look through some photos to see how I use balance when composing a photo.

Here are some that I took a few weeks ago.
I really liked the artwork on this concrete tank.
I thought that  I would include the posts in the background to make the photo a bit more interesting.
I think that has something to do with balance.

Although maybe the post draws your eye away from the artwork.
Perhaps this is a poor example of balance in photography. The posts become more of a distraction. Not sure...

Loved the texture in this photo below.
I used the bottom left & top right to add some contrasting colour, line & texture.
I think this fits somehow into the idea of balancing shapes.

Symmetry, perfect balance of the windows.
The fire hose on the right makes it slightly off balance but adds something to the overall picture.
I think that these photos capture something of what Kat was talking about, & you can check out more posts about balance here.

scavenger hunt

Vintage...
My clever sister -in- law Sarah makes beautiful art using vintage playing cards.
(these ones are from a 1935 card game called Crossword.)
She also makes other beautiful things using vintage 'finds' that you can check out here.

Word or quote...

Nature's own....

People...
2 people & a pooch.

Photographer's choice...
On Monday afternoon/night there was a military training operation happening near us.
Every 20 minutes or so Black Hawk helicopters would fly directly over our house.
Really low & really loud.

weekend reflection

I love blue sky reflections on buildings.
The other day I saw this building & quite liked the tall green plant in the foreground.

Not sure which one I liked best: plant in focus & reflection out of focus or the other way around.

ten on ten

It's been a busy week.
Very nice to get to the weekend.
Even nicer to stop to notice the things around me.
Joining  in with Rebekah at a bit of sunshine taking 10 photos over 10 hours on the 10th day of the month.

Even though it was sunny, Charlie's cricket was cancelled (grounds too wet),  so we had a slow start.
James was very happy to be out & about. The rest of us spent a bit of time doing some chores.
Then a visit to my dad & a BBQ outdoors to finish off the day.

This is what my day looked like...
