A few weeks ago I was in the city people watching, and taking photos. We saw these men working away in their workshop on the top floor of the Strand Arcade so I asked them if we could take their photo. Very brave of me! We had to stay behind the line, but we snapped away as they did their thing. I love the light on the shoes and in the workshop.

wednesday afternoon

It's been unseasonably warm this May, and I'm noticing the beautiful autumn light and loving the gorgeous sun-filled days.
Mandarins and roses in the garden. The last autumn leaves ready to fall. Blue skies.

five hundred

This is my 500th post here on knowing where to stand, so I thought it might be interesting to reflect a little  on photography and blogging.

I started way back in February 2011- here is my very first post.  I had just completed a photo a day gratitude journal during 2010, and  I became enamoured with taking photos. After a number of years of a part time paid work and a very busy family that was (and is)  full of complex needs, taking photos was a great creative outlet for me.  Having a blog seemed to me a good way to sort photos and keep them in one place. A way to have a focus on something other than the everyday grind. For me, it's never really been about numbers of followers or comments but I have really loved the community and the connections that I have made here. In fact, with a friend who I met through this  blog I have enjoyed collaborating on a project that we call two takes.

I've slowed down a little bit since that very enthusiastic first year, but I'm still posting regularly. I don't have any grand goals for my photography, or this blog- mostly I just photograph the things around me. And I really enjoy it.

After 500 posts, I really love this little space.

I had a lovely weekend in Brisbane. I went up there on my own to spend some time with my brothers. One of them has a big birthday this week and lives there, so we thought we'd all get together for the weekend. Lots of walking, chatting and eating. A very nice thing to do.

:: beautiful blue water at a marina that we wandered around
:: rain in the distance, mangroves in the foreground
:: a rainbow at Mt Gravatt lookout

Lying in the hammock in the backyard, looking up.

Last week I was fighting off a cold. I had a quiet week, took some time to rest. I managed to lie in the hammock in the sun for a little while. Very restful & restorative.  Then the clouds came over....

people watching

I had such a fun day today watching people.
Starting off at Central station & meandered down to Circular Quay via the Strand Arcade we wandered slowly, stopped, observed & took photos. Our aim was to capture a slice of daily life. It is a challenge to do street photography in way that is unobtrusive & authentic, to capture people going about their daily life. It was definitely made easier by the company of the lovely Justine. We both took a lot of photos. I deleted more than half & ended up with only a handful to share.

Here are some of the photos from our day out....

'Daily life' is the May challenge for an amateur photography group that I'm part of- I may or may not submit one of these....
